The "Mu" Story
Mu Carvings grew out of two decades of living and working in rural China, where I developed close relationships with Bai artisans in Jianchuan County. Their intricate craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage—at risk of being lost—became the inspiration for Mu Carvings: a way to support these artisans and share their work with the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
“Mu” means wood in Chinese, reflecting both the material and the craft at the heart of what we do. Our mission is straightforward: connect skilled artisans with global audiences through hand-crafted, high-quality wood décor. At PNW Global, this work aligns with our broader mission—building bridges across cultures, ideas, and communities, guided by respect, connection, and purpose.

For over a thousand years, artisans in Jianchuan, Yunnan have perfected the art of woodcarving. Inspired by nature, folklore, and local traditions, they create intricate panels, screens, and figures that showcase extraordinary skill and imagination. Despite its richness, this craft remains largely unknown outside China, making each piece a rare glimpse into a centuries-old heritage.
